I want to address prayer in the Christian world. Prayer is talking to the Father through Jesus Christ. It is a direct communication between us and God.
There are many reasons why we pray. We pray for help, guidance, wisdom, praise, worship etc. Jesus said not to pray like some do in public with vain repetitions. Prayer needs to be an intimate time with God through Jesus. We pray many times when we are in trouble and need God to help us out of our trouble which we usually have gotten ourselves into. We rarely pray just to praise and worship God.
As I learned in Sunday School, one of the very first things we need to do in prayer is to confess our sins to the Master asking forgiveness. There is a model prayer that Jesus told us as an example. It starts Our Father who art in Heaven Hallowed be thy name. Then it goes on Thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Acknowledging the Sovereignty of God and asking that His will be done. Then it goes on give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil, then at the end again it acknowledges the sovereignty of God by saying for Thine is the kingdom and the Power and the glory forever. Amen.
We do not have to quote this prayer every time but we should pattern our prayer life after it. We need to first ask forgiveness and at the same time forgive others. This is not an option for believers. We as believers must forgive others in order to keep that communication between us and God open.
Jesus prayed on the Cross Father forgive them for they know not what they do. He did not ask for vengeance, or total destruction. He asked for the Father to forgive them. Now that is true love.
So when we pray we should first give God the praise and worship he deserves and then ask God for his will in his life, then to forgive us while we forgive others then other requests. Prayer should always be in this order, ending in praise and worship for the Savior.
